Rug Padding

Rug pads are a necessary accessory for anyone who invests in area rugs of any kind. In the past it was thought that only rugs that were laid on slippery surfaces, such as hardwood or tiles, would need to have some kind of padding to prevent the rug from moving, thereby actually presenting a risk of injury to anyone who might stride across the floor and catch the area rug from a bad angle. Since then, however, many consumers noticed that their rugs evidenced poor wear and soon it became obvious that a rug pad properly placed underneath a rug resting on any kind of surface appeared to solve the wear and tear issue.

It is true that rug padding not only secures the rug into place, but it actually protects the very fibers. Consider the fact that stepping on a rug that is not secured will create some movement. The smaller the rug, the larger the movement; the movement generates friction, which in time causes fibers to rip, stitching to wear out, and tufts to actually pull out. Rug padding prevents any movement of the rug whatsoever, thus greatly decreasing any destructive friction.

It is therefore not surprising that when you visit stores which sell oriental rugs padding is often highly recommended and sometimes automatically assumed that you will purchase it. Especially for antique oriental rugs, padding is required to greatly decrease any further wear and tear that will be coming the way of the antique rugs. Padding also gives a certain bounce that those who have numerous rugs in their homes enjoy.

Whether you are looking for an area rug pad, a 2 x 4 non slip pad for a rug on carpet, or if you require rug padding for a bathroom tile floor which is overlaid with rugs, you will do well to avail yourself of the correct rug padding for the job. Wood floors discolored from rug pad use showcase what will happen when you use the improper kind of rug padding on a surface!

It is important, when looking for carpet/rug padding, to be specific not only about the size and shape of the area rug - pads may need to be cut for size, but they usually come in the general ballpark size and shape of the rug – but to also keep in mind the material on which the padding will be sitting and the material which it will be gripping. Thus, for an oriental rugs seller, padding is often viewed as protecting the rug from being torn by the static an underlying carpet may impose. Similarly, oriental rugs on carpet with rug padding that is made for a wood floor finish will not be as protected. Know your rug pad and do not add a rug on top of a carpet without the proper pad!
