Meditation is not something that comes easily for most westerners, and if your life stacks up like most everyone else’s, you are probably wired into the real world with a computer, Internet access, telephone, cell phone, Blackberry device, instant messaging, and a whole slew of other devices out to capture your attention. 24-hour news channels are making an escape from the murder and mayhem in the world impossible, and since all this information is available to you at the touch of a button, it takes the average person usually a lot of time and some determination to leave it all behind in search of the peace brought by meditation. Cushions, statuettes, candles, and other ornamentation will help to set the mood.

Zabuton meditation cushions, Zafu meditation cushions and chairs, and even oversized meditation floor cushions and meditation mats are available on the Internet and also in retail outlets. Why invest in some high quality meditation cushions when you have a pillow on your bed? The answer is easy! Consider that the fillings of proper meditation cushions are used to help you gain that physical sense of rest needed for letting your mind get to rest as well. While your bedding may be filled with downs and thus offer you a wonderful sleep, it will not give you the kind of support needed as you sit up on it in the hopes of focusing body and mind. Instead, specialized meditation cushions are filled with buckwheat hulls, Kapok, in some instances sand, or even rice.

While inner peace will not be guaranteed by these pillows, they will go a long ways to helping you get there. Furthermore, as you learn to lengthen the time you spend in meditation, you will need the proper back support to keep your position, to prevent your blood circulation from being cut off, and to keep physical discomfort from finding true, inner peace.
