Carpeting Stairs Knowledge Base
What is a reasonable price to pay for carpeting stairs? I have 13 stairs and wish to have them carpeted. I have some leftover carpeting I would like to use. Can anyone estimate for me how much carpeting would generally be needed to carpet 13 regular stair steps. Also, what would be a good price to pay the handyman to do this for me?
I have a raised ranch with carpeted stairs upon entry. Any alternate suggestions? I would like to get rid of the carpeting that is on the stairs from the lower level to the slate landing and the stairs up to the main level. I need something that can handle a lot of foot traffic. Part of my problem is that the carpeting on the main floor(living room, hallway) is the carpeting that continues down the stairs. I have thought of hardwood floors (presantly under the carpet, so I'm told), but it's rare to find a runner long enough for my hallway. I would like to keep the living room carpeted. In addition I have to work on the landing. The slate is all broken. I am told that ther is hard wood under there too. I don't know if the hard wood can hold up to heavy traffic. Removing shoes upon entry is not an option.
Installing carpet on stairs. I have carpet with attached pad and need advice on the best way to install it!? I am taking out the carpet in my living room and down the stairs into my entry way. The carpet I am using for the stairs has attached pad on it and I need to know if there is a different way to install it then regular non-padded carpet. I cant find any thing specific on line about attached pad carpeting and want to get some advice on whether I shoud use tack strips to hold down the carpeting or is there another route such as two sided carpet tape to use. Please advise!
Can you please provide instructions on how to convert carpeted stairs to wood? You should know I am a single mom with no carpentry experience. I just pulled out the carpet in my living and dining rooms and laid 3/4" oak wood on top of the red paper. I have so much left over and would love to attack my stairs that are now carpeted. The floors were my first project and I am so pleased with them. Am I being overly ambitious to take this project on - or can you provide me with some helpful tips? Thank you ever so much!

How to protect carpeted stairs? I have raised ranch house and the stairs that lead up to the main floor are carpeted. Since it is a high traffic zone, the carpet is getting dirty. Other than changing it to hardwood floor or placing a temporary carpet protector, is there a permanent solution. Would be really happy if someone can share their ideas. No stupid jokes please.
How much does it cost to "re-carpet" the stairs and upstairs of a 10 year old home? Hello, My wife and I are trying to determine how much it will cost to get our upstairs floor and stairs carpeted? We're looking at traditional plush, soft carpet (not Berber) with a premium pad (does that help?). I'm curious as to how much the labor will cost and how much an above average carpet and premium pad will cost for about 1,000 to 1,200 square feet (about the size of our upstairs area with stairs). Thanks much!
What could I put on my carpet stairs.. they are getting too dirty? So i have an apartment and its all carpeted including the entrace stairs. at the top of the stairs I have my shoe rack where everyone takes of their shoes but the stairs have gotten so dirty. What could I put on the stairs? I was thinking about that one material thats thick, plastic and clear. Are carpeted stairs safe for a declawed cat? I am about to move to a 2-story house, and I'm nervous that my declawed cat will fall down the stairs. I have another cat that is not declawed - he likes to chase and wrestle with her. I am worried that he will send her tumbling down the stairs when he gets too rough with her, and she won't be able to get her bearings because she can't grip the steps with her claws. Does anyone have experience with this? Thank you!
Can anyone advise me on having a runner type carpet fitted on my stairs? I live in a Victorian terrace and the stairs are not very wide; I'm wondering if a runner would look okay. I have been on some websites and the runners looks lovely but also expensive, especially the hardware. What is best to fit on the runner, rods or clips. Also, I live in a small town and am finding it difficult to locate carpet people to do the job, most are trying to talk me into regular stair carpet. What are the pros and cons of runners?
how much does it cost to fit carpet on stairs? very standard stairs, about 13 steps with about 2 1/2 SQM landing. how much does it cost if i call a carpet fitter?is it worth trying to fit it by ourselves? hi,to nannyb, thanks for answering! a few more question, did you buy carpet, underlay and grippers yourself? are grippers easy to get hold of? i really don't know anything of DIY,for £50,i'd rather have someone around and make them do it....
How do carpet runners on stairs work on landings? We'd like a carpet runner down our stairs to go with the 'period' feel of the hallway but what happens on the landings (we have 3 in total)? I've looked at lots of interior design books and they show the stairs from the bottom looking up so I can't tell. Does the carpet go all the way to the edges or is there a gap like on the stairs? If it goes all the way to the edges, will it not look weird? Is it more expensive to do this or do you just fold the edges under?
Cat scratches our short carpet on the stairs, would longer carpet stand up to that wear and tear? The carpet is super short and rough, perfect for a scratch pad for her. When she scratches it to death, it doesn't damage it at all. If I replaced that carpet with a longer, softer, nylon carpet, would that type of carpet get torn to shreds? I don't want to pay a bunch of money for new carpet on my stairs if my cat ends up making it look yucky by scratching it to death. I don't mind her scratching my stairs, rather there than my furniture!! Just wouldn't want new carpet ruined if I decided to replace the existing carpet.

Should I just use some thick brown paint to cover the divots? Thanks for your advice.
