Carpet sweepers saw the light of day in 1876. This is the year that Melville Bissell applied for and was granted a patent for this nifty little invention. Whether you currently own one of the Rainbow carpet sweepers, Rubbermaid carpet sweepers, or Bissell floor carpet sweepers, the odds are good that not much was improved upon when Mr. Bissell first put pen to paper to create this amazingly simply yet thoroughly useful cleaning tool.
Operating on the notion that inward rotating brushes will pick up debris and dirt and carry it upward, carpet sweepers are often little more than a shallow little box that has two rollers on the underside and a long handle attached to the top. The box traps the dirt and debris as the brushes rotate. Over time, carpet sweepers came to be one appliance no self-respecting home was without. While in the past the lady of the house had to rely on the strength of her arms to beat the rugs and thus shake out dirt and debris, with the old carpet sweepers this was not necessary to do all that often anymore.
Even today you will still see some commercial carpet sweepers in restaurants where junior employees will keep the areas around tables crumb free before and after the breakfast, lunch and dinner rushes. There are the Dyson carpet sweepers, Hempstead carpet sweepers, and other carpet sweepers of good quality that still operate on the same principles as their predecessors that made carpet sweepers history.
You buy carpet sweepers at Argos, and it is noteworthy that there are now also modernized versions of carpet sweepers available that are battery powered. The battery packs may be recharged to ensure proper operation speed. While carpet sweepers that rely on good, old fashioned elbow grease are still the norm, the kinds that currently work with height attachments which lets them be used on hardwood or laminate flooring are gaining popularity. While in the past there was a movement to have a different kind of cleaner for each flooring option, more and more homeowners are getting away from this notion simply because the spatial requirements of storing all these cleaning devices are prohibitive.
At this point in time this is probably one of the most useful carpet cleaning tools ever invented, and the fact that it is still commercially available attests to its success and its time defying functionality. Think of the ease with which stairs can now be cleaned! If you have pets, this is a wonderful way of avoiding having to vacuum consistently and instead you will be able to just roll the sweeper and pick up the worst of it in between vacuuming.
