Carpet Squares
If you have carpet squares, you may be at an added risk for insect damage and infestation. Insects living in and around carpets in the average residential home is nothing new, and by and large there may always be the risk of inviting some critters to set up their homes in your carpets, but if you are a reasonably good housekeeper on good terms with your vacuum, this will most likely not happen or only be a rare occurrence, secondary to a larger infestation outside that has finally spilled over into the home. In the past, when most floor coverings were still made of wool, damage from insets that would actually eat the wool was common. With the invention of special treatments, this risk was substantially curtailed, even if you have carpet tile squares made from wool.
Yet whether you have cheap carpet squares, or the most expensive commercial carpet squares money can buy, the risk that you may encounter the occasional insect is amplified by an incorrect installation. As you know, carpet squares may be glued down with double sided tape, and if the carpet squares are not placed closely next to one another or have tape applied all around them, crevices are created which can house the insects. What attracts the vermin to the crevices is the inability to properly clean up food and drink spills, and thus sugar may build up in these little crevices which the insects will lap up eagerly.
You can avoid having ants crawl over your Harry Potter carpet squares in search of a sweet meal by using interlocking carpet squares or peel and stick carpet squares that ensure that no usable space is left for them to congregate. Additionally, when you buy commercial carpet tiles squares make sure that they have been treated if they are made from wool. Clean up any food and drink spills immediately, and if it looks like something may have dripped between the carpet squares, use a wet paper towel or q-tip to remove it. Since carpet squares may be removed easily, you may have to go that route in case of stubborn insect infestations. If you find that you have an infestations outside that is threatening to come to the inside of the home, you can buy carpet squares to replace any that may have become dirtied with food, or you may just want to keep some wholesale carpet squares on hand in case you need to hire an exterminator and the products used discolor the squares slightly.
