A carpet installation can cost a lot of money. Yet when you consider that how to install carpet is best left to the experts or the die hard do-it-yourselfer with a garage full of professional tools and the knowledge to match them, it is not at all surprising that many a home owner shudders at the thought of installing carpet. Having said this, while it is true that how to lay carpet is often beyond the auspices of the average homeowner who might be handy with the vacuum but not the carpet knife, the fact that the things that precede the carpet-laying also cost money rarely if ever enters the mind of the customer.

Carpet installation instructions are very clear in that they require all old carpeting to be removed and the under-floors to be vacuumed and cleaned thoroughly of all loose soil and other debris. While you may be lacking carpet installation tools, you probably do have some sharp knives in your toolbox that could cut through carpet. Ask your installer if the carpet installation cost will be reduced if you do the old carpet removal yourself. Since this is a labor intensive process and also requires the hauling away and proper dumping of the old carpeting, your carpet installation cost may actually go down if the installer does not have to handle this task. Thus, while a do it yourself carpet installation may be beyond your ability, carpet installation prep could very easily be done by you.

To begin the carpet installation prep, you need to first move out all the furniture. Next, you need to thoroughly vacuum the carpet. Sure, you are cutting it out anyways, but keep in mind that whatever you remove now you do not have to try and clean up later. While you probably do not own any carpet installation supplies or carpet laying tools, you should have sharp knifes and replacement blades in your tool box. Cut the carpet around the edges, being mindful of phone lines, cable lines, and especially home alarm lines – as all of these are frequently laid underneath the carpet or at least at the edge.

While MG Midget carpet installation may have been something you did in your late teens, carpet-laying in a home is a decidedly different task, and a proper collection of carpet installation supplies a must before beginning. Thus, it is unwise to attempt any install yourself without these items in place. The only exception to this carpet installation rule would be an outdoor carpet installation which may be done quickly, easily, and with a minimum amount of effort.
